This Roku 2 XS review will take a look at the device, its advantages, and its drawbacks.
Roku 2 XS Review
The Roku 2 is a device that can be attached to virtually any television, even those that do not connect to the Internet on their own, and make it possible to stream video and music content from the internet without a computer. It comes in three models with the XS being the top of the line and having the most functionality.
Roku 2 XS : Device Features
The device features a fast GPU with high definition video capability up to 1080p, 802.11n Wi-Fi connectivity, and blue tooth. The internal memory only allows for up to 4 preset “channels”, but the unit has a microSD card slot that makes it possible to overcome this issue. In addition, the XS retains the ability to plug in an Ethernet connection.
Roku 2 XS : Super Remote
The remote for XS has been redesigned. It retains its IR functionality, but now adds RF Bluetooth functionality with a built-in gyroscope that makes it possible to use it as a “motion” control similar to the Wiimote produced by Nintendo. The reason for this change is that Roku plans to brings games to the lineup of content one can obtain. They have already started with “Angry Birds”, which is included free of charge.
It is obvious from the redesigned remote that Roku plans to make gaming a big part of their future offerings for the XS. At present, “Angry Birds” is the only game available. However, Roku has indicated that they hope to be able to offer a “significant” number of games in the $5 range by Christmas 2011.
Roku 2 XS : Small, Lightweight, More Channels
The hardware is very small, presenting only a small footprint. It so lightweight that shifting cords can knock it off the shelf and away from the television. The software, on the other hand, is plentiful. The unit offers a significant number of “channels” of content, both video and music. Some of the best known include Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu Plus. Several of these have updated their signals to incorporate 1080p high def video, Doby 5.1 audio, and subtitles.
Roku 2 XS : Weakness
The focus of this device seems to be entirely on adding new channels of content from the Internet. However, many have been disappointed by the lack of connectivity for playing local media. Those with USB and networks that would allow them to view content stored on their computers will be let down if they expect this device to allow them to broadcast their media to their televisions.
Roku 2 XS : Summarize
Overall, the review finds it to be a relatively low-cost option for gaining access to digital content from the Internet on one’s television, even if it does not connect to the Web directly. Originally designed to stream videos from Netflix, the device now offers nearly 300 channels of content.
It has Wi-Fi connectivity as well as Ethernet-wired capability. The newest generation has added some changes in the remote to make it more gamer friendly and introduced the game, “Angry Birds” for free with the plan to add more games in the near future.
